Eleven years later, U.S. troops commanded by Winfield Scott invaded Mexico and defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of Cerro Gordo. Soldiers from Illinois took Santa Anna’s prosthetic leg as a trophy, and you can now visit the leg at a military museum in Springfield.
