The Thread…
Mend Us.
Heated political discourse is not new. In 1856, a member of the House beat a Senator almost to death in the U.S. Capitol using a cane. The overtly racist guy who did the beating resigned and then was subsequently reelected by the people. It only took nine years and over 600,000 deaths for the country to mend itself.
trippin’ through the bluegrass
Why are there so many bluegrass songs about trains, cabins, and murder? As trippy as bluegrass music commonly is, a person would think they could all get along while riding the train to the cabin (shout-out to Molly Tuttle and Ketch Secor who inspired this design).
United
When we refer to our nation as the “United States” what we are actually proclaiming is that we are a united group of people. If the people are not united, the foundation of the society begins to crumble. Perhaps Thomas and Sally knew this better than we ever did. Or, maybe Sally was a slave and simply negotiated the freedom of her unborn children.
Iowa motto
Iowa has one of the best mottos in the nation. It’s hard to believe that it originated from a group of politicians. If it were rewritten today it would include a couple caveats. *Personal liberties are subject to government regulation. **Government regulation is subject to political opinion.
Cerro gordo, 1847
In 1836, troops under the leadership of Santa Anna laid siege to the Alamo and basically killed everyone. Eleven years later, U.S. troops commanded by Winfield Scott invaded Mexico and defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of Cerro Gordo. Soldiers from Illinois took Santa Anna’s prosthetic leg as a trophy, and you can now visit the leg at a military museum in Springfield.
George’s Dentures
No, they were not made of wood. They were made of all kinds of other crap, which may have included teeth from slaves. If you want to see them in person they are available for viewing at Mount Vernon. If you want to see them on a t-shirt, here you go.
Evolution to ai
Years ago, painters declared that photography wasn’t art. More recently, traditional animators viewed computer animation as a very real threat to their craft (and a lower form of art). Today, AI is under fire and perhaps for good reason. It may end up killing all the artists.
proud treasonist
“The crisis is arrived when we must assert our rights, or submit to every imposition that can be heaped upon us, till custom and use shall make us as tame and abject slaves.”
- George Washington, 1774
high five
Can you imagine how our nation would have developed had these two individuals never met? Two people from dramatically different backgrounds grew to respect and learn from each other by communicating. Today’s political echo chambers would not likely produce the same result.
Corps of discovery
After being captured and taken from her family, Sacagawea was sold into marriage when she was 13. A short time later she had a baby. A few months after that, she took the baby on a relaxing tour of the northwest with Lewis and Clark.
Your ALGORITHM IS WRONG
Sometimes the best thing to do to avoid manipulation is to take the responsible device and throw it off a cliff. Or…maybe just put down your phone every once in a while. We have as much of a responsibility to protect ourselves as the designers of the algorithm do.
jesus in iowa
Corn didn't exist where Jesus lived. Apparently, he could only access the tender, buttery, goodness of Iowa sweet corn in Heaven. Using basic logic, that means Heaven is indeed in Iowa.
